Car Rental by Owner, Inc. provides both liability and physical damage coverage to renters and owners when vehicles are actively rented through the CRBO platform. This protection includes liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage (such as fire, theft, and vandalism) and applies for the entire duration of each reservation—from start to finish.
Please note: Coverage is only applicable to trips booked through CRBO. As such, vehicle owners are still legally required to register and insure their vehicles independently when not sharing them on the platform.
Our Time-Lapse Activation feature gives renters convenient access to the vehicle before their trip and ensures timely, secure locking after the trip ends. Renters have a 20-minute grace period post-trip before the vehicle automatically locks for safety, providing a smooth and secure experience.
Our Contactless Check-In offers a seamless, self-service experience that enhances convenience and personalization for renters. Integrated directly with the CRBO platform, it simplifies the check-in process, minimizes delays, and reduces the need for host or customer support interaction.
The CRBO platform allows hosts to conveniently link their rental vehicles to their vacation properties, creating a seamless experience for guests. Renters can easily search by address, city, state, or zip code to view available vacation rentals along with the vehicles connected to them. Whether starting from a vehicle listing or a property listing, renters can navigate between the two effortlessly.
There's no need to match travel dates or coordinate with the host—thanks to CRBO’s Instant Booking technology, vehicles remain connected to the property and can be reserved anytime, 24/7. This streamlined process ensures guests enjoy added convenience and flexibility during their stay.
Car Rental by Owner, Inc. offers liability and physical damage coverage to both renters and vehicle owners during active rentals booked through the CRBO platform. This includes liability, collision, and comprehensive protection, such as coverage for fire, theft, and vandalism, for the full duration of each reservation.
While this coverage applies to all CRBO bookings, vehicle owners are still legally required to maintain personal registration and insurance when the vehicle is not in use on the platform.
In the rare event that a vehicle is damaged during a CRBO rental, guests and hosts are required to report it immediately. If damage is discovered after the trip ends, hosts should notify CRBO customer service within 24 hours and submit pre- and post-trip photos to document the vehicle’s condition.
Physical damage reimbursement is not insurance, but a contractual agreement between the host and CRBO. Once reported, a CRBO associate will respond within 72 hours to assist with the claims process. Hosts are responsible for a deductible, and eligible repair costs beyond that will be covered by CRBO’s commercial insurance partners.
Liability and physical damage coverage applies only during active rentals booked through the CRBO platform, subject to certain limitations and exclusions.
CRBO accepts a wide range of vehicles for rental, including gas, diesel, hybrid, and electric vehicles that seat eight or fewer people, as well as cars, light trucks, specialty vehicles, and classic cars. To be eligible for listing on the platform, vehicles must be from the 2015 model year or newer, with fewer than 130,000 miles. They must also meet CRBO’s insurance and vehicle inspection requirements, have a fair market value of up to $50,000, and hold a clean title (not branded or salvage). Additionally, vehicles must not have ever been declared a total loss.
As a host, you receive 75% of the rental cost, with the remaining percentage covering CRBO’s platform operations, administration fees, marketing, and ensuring financial protection for potential damage to your vehicle. Hosts set their own daily rental price and can apply discounts, but it's important to remain competitive when determining your rates. While CRBO encourages competitive pricing, the final decision rests with the host. Any additional fees charged to guests, such as those for extra mileage, extended usage, or late returns, are fully paid to the host, minus the administration fee, in accordance with CRBO's policy.
To receive payouts, CRBO sets up payout accounts through Stripe® during your onboarding process. You’ll be prompted to create your payout account via the app or website, which takes just a few minutes. Typically, it takes 5-7 business days to verify your account before you can list your vehicle on CRBO. A Welcome Kit will be shipped immediately after setup.
CRBO or Stripe® will contact you if additional information is required to complete the process. All personal information is securely encrypted by Stripe® for your protection.
Payouts are issued twice a month according to the Stripe® payment schedule. If a rental occurs during a pay period but is not finalized, the payout will be processed in the following period. Depending on your bank or card setup, direct deposits may take 3-5 business days to appear in your account.
CRBO's experience suggests that credit card companies typically do not provide coverage for vehicles rented through our peer-to-peer platform, as CRBO operates as a rideshare service. Since coverage policies can vary, we cannot offer specific advice regarding what your credit card may or may not cover. For detailed information on rideshare coverage, we recommend contacting your credit card company directly.
CRBO vehicles are always connected to the rental unit where you're staying, available for use 24/7, year-round. There is no need for pickup or drop-off arrangements, as you won’t need to meet anyone at the airport, parking lot, or any other location. Simply use the vehicle at your convenience during your stay.
To rent a car through CRBO in the United States, renters must be at least 25 years old. If you're under 25, a young driver’s fee may apply, which varies depending on age. You'll also need to provide a valid driver’s license with a photo (front and back), such as a driver’s license or passport, as well as a selfie photo or facial scan for verification. A valid credit or debit card is required for payment.
Mileage limits are determined by the vacation rental owner (VRO), not by CRBO. If the mileage limit is exceeded, there may be an additional cost. However, the incremental cost for excess mileage will not exceed $0.79 per mile or kilometer over the allowed limit.
There are no restrictions on driving a rental car to another state or province. However, mileage rates still apply. For more details on mileage terms and conditions, please refer to the relevant sections.
